Our Story

A Firm Built on Patience and Plain Language

Caribou & Quill was founded in Halifax with a simple conviction: legal documents should be accessible to everyone, not just those who can afford ongoing legal retainers.

Who We Are

About Caribou & Quill

Caribou & Quill opened its doors in Halifax with a straightforward purpose: to provide individuals, families, and small businesses across Nova Scotia with access to well-prepared legal documents at a price that makes sense. Too often, people defer important paperwork — wills, incorporation, lease agreements — simply because the process feels opaque or the cost feels unpredictable. We set out to change that.

The name reflects something of our character. The caribou appears on the Nova Scotia coat of arms — sturdy, deliberate, and built for this landscape. The quill speaks to the careful, considered work of writing: every document we prepare is drafted thoughtfully, reviewed in detail, and explained in language that serves the reader rather than obscures meaning.

Our approach is not one-size-fits-all. When someone comes to us to prepare a will, we spend time understanding their family situation, their wishes, and the people they're entrusting. When a new business owner arrives uncertain whether to incorporate or operate as a sole proprietor, we walk through the considerations together before any paperwork is started. When a tenant needs to understand a commercial lease before signing, we read it as carefully as if we were signing it ourselves.

We serve clients across Halifax and the broader Nova Scotia region, working primarily in three areas: will and estate document preparation, small business formation, and lease and tenancy agreements. Each engagement is fixed-fee and scoped clearly in advance — so there are no surprises when the work is done.

Mission & Values

What Guides Our Work

Transparency First

Every engagement begins with a clear scope and fixed price. We don't proceed until you know exactly what's included and what the outcome will be.

Clarity of Language

Legal documents don't need to be difficult to understand. We write in plain language and explain everything during the review session before finalization.

Unhurried Process

We don't rush these conversations. Estate wishes, business structures, and lease obligations deserve proper attention — and we give them that.

Regional Knowledge

We work within Nova Scotia's specific legislative context — the Wills Act, the Partnership Act, the Residential Tenancies Act — and keep current with provincial updates.

Discretion & Privacy

Personal and financial matters are handled with complete discretion. Client information is never shared or used beyond the scope of the engagement.

Accessible Service

Fixed fees make our services accessible to people who might otherwise defer important documents indefinitely. Clear pricing removes the hesitation of reaching out.

Standards & Protocols

How We Maintain Quality

Provincial Compliance Review

All documents are prepared in accordance with current Nova Scotia legislation. We review provincial updates regularly and incorporate any regulatory changes into our templates.

Two-Stage Document Review

Every document undergoes an internal review before the client walkthrough session. Nothing is finalized until the client has had the opportunity to ask questions and confirm their satisfaction.

Secure Client File Management

Client documents are stored in encrypted digital archives with access restricted to the assigned team member. Physical copies are handled with equivalent care.

Confidentiality as Standard Practice

All client information is treated as strictly confidential. We do not disclose client details to any third party except as required by applicable law or expressly authorized by the client.

Revision Policy

Each engagement includes a defined number of revision rounds as part of the fixed fee. We believe first drafts rarely capture everything, and revisions are part of the work, not an add-on.

Ongoing Professional Development

Our team maintains current knowledge of Nova Scotia tenancy law, federal and provincial corporate requirements, and estate legislation through ongoing review of legislative updates and legal resources.

Our Expertise

Document Services Shaped by Atlantic Canadian Practice

Preparing a will in Nova Scotia involves specific formal requirements distinct from other provinces — witness requirements, execution protocols, and provisions for personal directives that carry legal weight in their own right. Caribou & Quill has prepared hundreds of estate documents for Halifax residents, from straightforward individual wills to more involved arrangements involving blended families, executor appointments outside of immediate family, and directives covering long-term care decisions.

Small business formation in Canada involves decisions that matter years down the line — the choice between provincial and federal incorporation, the structure of operating agreements, the setup of share capital, and the registration of business names. We work with entrepreneurs in Halifax who are formalizing for the first time, freelancers moving into corporate structures, and small partnerships looking for clarity on their legal arrangements. The process is explained clearly at every stage.

Lease agreements in Nova Scotia must comply with the Residential Tenancies Act for residential arrangements and common law standards for commercial leases. Poorly drafted leases create disputes; well-drafted leases prevent them. Whether you're a landlord seeking enforceable standard clauses, a commercial tenant reviewing a multi-year lease before signing, or a property owner managing several units with consistent documentation, our lease service adapts to the situation.
